Alte Pinakothek

The 'Alte' or 'Old' Pinakothek is named after the historical era that the collection spans, from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century.

The Alte Pinakothek also referred to as the Old Gallery in Munich, has architecture that spans the first half of the nineteenth century and the decades following World War II. In German history and architecture, both of these eras are significant.

Since 1836, art lovers have been able to peruse the impressive rooms on two floors that the architect Leo von Klenze created. It exhibits more than 700 pieces of European art, including one of the largest collections of works by Albrecht Dürer and Peter Paul Rubens.

Highlights in the history of art include, for instance, pieces by Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, and Albrecht Altdorfer. This group of paintings includes works by some of the most renowned painters in history, including Rubens, Botticelli, Da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, and Botticelli.

• The Old German painting collection is one of the largest and most comprehensive of its kind:

The most breathtaking sight in the entire museum is the Peter Paul Rubens oil painting 'The Great Last Judgment,' which is displayed on the top floor in the room devoted to Flemish paintings from the 17th century and stands more than six meters in height.
