In memory of Saint Polycarp, the Bishop of Smyrna and a martyr who played a pivotal role in the development of the Catholic Church, the building of the church was dedicated.

In addition to being a well-liked spot for vacationers, the Saint Polycarp Church is cherished by devout Catholics as a holy site and a pilgrimage destination. The church is also regarded as one of the oldest in the city because it was built in 1625, making it one of the first buildings in the city.

The church has a look that is simultaneously refined and unassuming when viewed from the exterior. On the other hand, the interiors are breathtakingly beautiful and richly decorated with luxurious particulars.

Things to do at Saint Polycarp Church:

  • The architecture of the church is quite pleasing to the eye: It is in the form of a basilica, and a dome sits atop the edifice. The aisles are separated from the nave, which is covered by a barrel vault, by a wall made of marble columns in a design called Corinthian. In stark contrast to the splendor and serenity of the cathedral, the entrance to the church is a simple door painted beige and white that, at times, is easy to pass by without noticing.
  • The architecture of the walls and pillars, together with the vibrant paintings and frescos that cover them, contribute to the magical and calming atmosphere that can be found within the buildings.
  • On the inside of the church's dome and the vault of the nave are painted frescoes depicting Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, the Apostles, and Saint Polycarp. Additionally, there are frescoes painted on the walls of the nave.
